There are many episodes related to this subject. Followings are some ot the example which the writer actually experienced. I have been American car user for about 20 years and owned 5 American cars during this period but I've never experienced any defect except general wear. What I experienced were only two occasions. One is that I heard irregular sound in the front door of my new Cadillac and let mechanic personnel to check it. What we found in the door was a parts supposed to be left by mistake in the assembly process. The mechanic personnel said "It is not a strange case on American car." Another experience was on my new Imperial LeBaron. Engine hood didn't close at equal level to its fender on the left edge. I thought these do not spoil the performance of a car and American manufacturers did not regard as a defect and I was not nervous about it. However, the general Japanese people regard above two cases as defects. These are never be observed on Japanese cars. I have another experience on importing Fender guitar amplifiers of American famous brand. Though they have highly evaluated among Japanese professional musicians for their good sound which Japanese manufacturers never able to create, they have rough finish on the cabinet. Vinyl leather had came off from wood part at the corner of cabinet and we can see wooden part. Then we must fix them by ironing vinyl leather at every corner of cabinet before the delivery. I heard that a certain Japanese tailor telling following story. When he participate in a tailors' contest in Japan, a panel of judges examine how the cutting is done correctly or the seam is finished carefully, while, in Italy, it is examined how the suits beautifully drape according to the movement of the person wearing it. |
